OUR GUIDES
BRISTOL BAY WATERSHED
The Bristol Bay Watershed is one of the finest fishing destinations on Earth, drawing anglers from around the globe. These legendary waters are home to all five species of Pacific salmon, as well as trophy rainbow trout, dolly varden, Arctic char, northern pike and Arctic grayling.
What sets this region apart is the sheer abundance and size of its fish. Salmon arrive by the millions, and the rainbow trout here are bigger, wilder, and more aggressive than anywhere else—often reaching an astonishing 30+ inches.
The Sockeye Salmon runs alone are a sight to behold: each summer, up to 20 million Sockeye surge up the Naknek River, a spectacle that once supported several historic canneries and continues to define the region today.
We are proud participants in Trout Unlimited’s Bristol Bay Guide Ambassador program, dedicated to safeguarding the Bristol Bay watershed from pollution caused by mineral mining. Protecting the salmon means protecting the bears and the forests they call home.

ALASKAN SALMON
King Salmon arrive in late June, signaling the start of prime rainbow trout fishing, and continue their run through late July.
Sockeye salmon begin to appear in June and reach peak numbers by mid to late July, filling the Naknek River and its tributaries in remarkable abundance.
Silver salmon make their appearance in late July, and depending on the season and weather, may continue well into September.
Chum and pink salmon are present throughout the season as well, however runs of these species are generally smaller in our area , especially when compared to sockeye.
RAINBOW TROUT
Rainbow Trout are around throughout the entire season, making them a top target on the Naknek River. As the ice breaks, these trophy-sized rainbows move out of Naknek Lake to feed on last year’s salmon and drifting roe carried by the spring flow.
As autumn arrives, rainbow trout flood back into the Naknek River, drawn by the rich flow of salmon flesh and roe from upstream—an unforgettable season for anglers.
Experience world-class rainbow trout fishing at Brooks Camp, where sharing the river with Alaska’s iconic brown bears is part of the adventure.
Several fly-out locations also provide incredible rainbow trout fishing, which can be arranged as an additional-cost adventure.
DOLLY VARDEN
Dolly Varden are among the most sought-after fish on our fly-out excursions, often found cruising the smaller creeks throughout the region.
As the rivers and creeks begin to thaw in late spring and early summer, Dolly Varden move in from overwintering areas to feed heavily on out-migrating salmon fry and early insect hatches.
By late July, when salmon runs grow thicker, these aggressive fish turn into voracious predators, following the salmon to feed on their eggs.
A member of the char family, dolly varden are celebrated for their vivid colors—under the right light, their hues can sometimes seem to mirror the autumn landscape itself.

ARCTIC GRAYLING
Recognizable by their iridescent colors and tall, sail-like dorsal fin, Arctic grayling are among the most captivating fish to pursue in Alaska.
These native freshwater fish thrive in the clear, cold creeks and rivers surrounding Fat Bear Lodge, where they’re known for aggressive surface strikes and impressive acrobatics for their size.
Light tackle makes them especially fun to catch, and they’re at their best when targeted with a fly rod and dry flies—perfect for anglers who love visual, topwater action.
